Two Scripts, One Being — 二つの書、ひとつの存在

Two Scripts, One Being
Sacred spirits have long been believed to dwell in mountains, rivers, even old tools — and this belief is not unique to Japan. In ancient Persia, too, script was never mere symbol; it was treated as something that mirrored the soul. Good thoughts, good words, good deeds — thought, speech, and action are not separate, but part of one continuous movement.

Japan has a concept for this: *kotodama* — the spirit that lives within words, and the idea that what is spoken can touch and shape the world. The belief that words themselves hold a living force that shapes reality resonates with the spirit of calligraphy: quieting the mind, and pouring one's full awareness into every single stroke. In Persia, too, alongside script, the ornamental patterns that accompany it have long been rendered as vessels of prayer and beauty. Different as these two forms of expression are, both have sought — through writing, through drawing — to give visible form to the invisible.

To write is the moment a thought passes through the body and takes form.

Lines that run, lines that fall.
Persian script moves horizontally, from right to left.
Japanese calligraphy descends vertically, from top to bottom.

Writing carries meaning, but it also carries the physical rhythm of the culture from which it comes: the movement of the hand, the length of a breath, the direction of the eye.

In this installation, the two writing systems meet within a single space. Neither covers nor erases the other. Instead, they cross, overlap, and coexist.

Beyond them, the trees and moss of the garden remain visible. As the light changes and the wind moves through the landscape, the writing changes with it. This echoes *shakkei* — borrowed scenery — the Japanese garden tradition of allowing the landscape beyond the garden to become part of the composition. Here, the same idea is carried into language.

Even characters we cannot read can still be experienced: as line, gesture, rhythm, and landscape.

Japanese has another beautiful expression for language: *koto no ha* — the leaves of words. Leaves grow, gather, tremble in the wind, and eventually fall. Here, words written on transparent surfaces come to rest among the living leaves of the garden. For a moment, the metaphor becomes real.
